OUR STORY
Doukénie Winery is more than just a vineyard; it’s a testament to the enduring spirit of family and the pursuit of a dream.

Doukénie Today
Doukénie Winery is proud to be part of a long tradition of agriculture at Windham Farm. Our property is more than just a picturesque backdrop for our vineyards. It’s a working farm that sustains life and connects us to the land.
While approximately 23 acres are dedicated to our thriving vineyards, much of the remaining land is still actively farmed. Fields of corn, soy, and hay stretch across the landscape. Black Angus cattle graze peacefully in our pastures, contributing to the ecological balance of the farm.
At the heart of it all lies a beautiful pond—a serene centerpiece and favorite spot for our guests. It’s also a haven for wildlife. Our beloved winery ducks love to be fed by children and adults alike. You’ll often find them paddling around or basking in the sun on the banks. Be sure to ask us for some duck food so you can enjoy feeding them too!
The pond also serves as a migratory stop for Canada geese. Keep an eye out for their impressive formations flying overhead. During the spring, you may be lucky enough to see adorable ducklings and goslings waddling along the shore with their parents. (But remember to admire them from afar—mama birds are very protective!)
From every corner of our property, guests can enjoy the results of our commitment to agriculture and the preservation of this beautiful landscape.

She Planted the Seeds of Our Dreams
Doukénie
Our story begins with George Bazaco’s grandmother, Doukénie, a young woman who bravely immigrated from Greece at the age of 14. She carried with her the determination to build a better life and her cherished mandolin. Her courage and resilience are woven into the very fabric of our Winery.
When George and his wife, Nicki, purchased the farm in 1983, it was Doukénie who inspired them to take a leap of faith. She encouraged them to replace the existing profitable crops with grape vines. This was a decision that required years of patience and dedication before they would yield their first vintage. It was a testament to their love for family, their respect for their heritage, and their unwavering belief in the potential of Virginia wine country. Today, Doukénie’s mandolin hangs on the wall in our tasting room. It’s a constant reminder of her enduring spirit and the legacy that continues to inspire us.

Carrying on the Legacy
Hope
Doukénie’s daughter and George’s mother, Hope, played a vital role in shaping the welcoming atmosphere Doukénie Winery is known for today. As one of the original wine educators, Hope shared her passion and knowledge with guests in the early days when the tasting room was still in the basement of the historic white house that predates the Civil War. She would often bake her incredible baklava to share with visitors, creating a warm and inviting experience.
Hope always sat on her stool by the window in the tasting room, ready to greet guests with a smile and a story. Though we sadly lost Hope in 2024 at the age of 99, her legacy lives on. Her spirit is embodied in our raspberry Merlot dessert wine, Hope’s Legacy. And her stool still sits proudly by the window in the tasting room. Not a day goes by that we don’t miss her—and her incredible baklava!
